Over 50 million Americans have trouble sleeping. Lack of sleep can lead to health problems like an expanding waistline, high blood pressure, and altered moods. Lack of sleep is a unique stress that induces a chronic stress response in the body. People often forget that they can improve their sleep through diet.

Want better sleep? It’s simple! Choose foods that can help you get more rest. These 5 foods will help you fall and stay asleep.

Bananas

Nutritional biochemist Shawn Talbott believes that bananas will help you sleep because they are high in potassium, which can help calm restless legs and prevent nighttime leg cramps.

Bananas also provide magnesium, which helps relax muscles and nerves and promotes healthy circulation and digestion, according to Michael Breus, a clinical psychologist. You can eat a banana plain or blend it into a smoothie.

Salmon

Planning for a good night’s sleep can start with a sleep-friendly dinner. Salmon is a great main course because it offers a healthy dose of omega-3 fatty acids, which have been shown to reduce surges of stress hormones and promote restfulness, according to the UCLA Center of East-West Medicine. Other fish, such as halibut, can also provide the benefits of omega-3. These fish contain vitamin B-6, which is needed to make the sleep inducing hormone melatonin.
