WEB Notes: If you are awake you know the weather events we are experiencing are not normal. These are all signs of the times. Are you awake to see them?
The tornado that struck El Reno, Okla., on Friday night is believed to be the widest on record in the United States at 2.6 miles across, the National Weather Service reported on Tuesday.
A 6.1-magnitude earthquake has struck off the Solomon Islands, the US Geological Survey says, but no immediate tsunami warning has been issued. The tremor, at a depth of 64 kilometers, hit in the Santa Cruz Islands, some 89 kilometers south of the remote town of Lata, where a tsunami left at least 10 people dead in February. Geoscience Australia gave a higher preliminary measurement of 6.6-magnitude, but said it was unlikely to have caused a local tsunami in the quake-prone region.

Update: Large US Marine force lands in Aqaba to deploy on Jordanian-Syrian border: The 1,000-strong 24th Marine Expeditionary Force unit is the largest the US has deployed in Jordan in the more than two years of the Syrian civil war.
The United States will send a Patriot missile battery and F-16 fighters to Jordan for a military drill and may keep the weapons there to counter the threat posed by Syria’s civil war, officials said. The anti-missile systems and jets were approved for deployment to Jordan as part of a joint exercise with Jordanian forces, US Central Command said in a statement on Monday.
This issue brings out strong feelings on both sides of the debate, there’s no question about that, and there has been a lot of misinformation that has been floated about the Gang of Eight’s proposal. While immigration reform is something that Congress must eventually address, there is a right way to go about it, but this bill is simply not it.
On Tuesday, the Senate Judiciary Committee cleared the immigration reform bill, which set the stage to bring it to the full chamber for debate next month. Perhaps the most glaring concern with the bill was mentioned in The Hill’s story on its passage out of committee (emphasis mine):
More than 60 countries have signed a landmark agreement to regulate the arms trade, requiring countries to think twice about which weapons deals they allow. However, doubts exist about whether the treaty will work.
The treaty was signed by representatives of 66 countries on Monday – the first day that the treaty was open to signatures.
(Video) – A week ago this notice was posted by concerned gun owners in the state of Texas:
We will be gathering for a legal armed open carry march to raise public awareness of gun laws in Texas. It is partially in response to the Temple Police Department violating the Second and Fourth Amendment rights of Active Duty MSGT Christopher J. Grisham HERE. Please join us all. We will be exercising our rights as free men and women. Be part of the solution. All permits and armed march route has been approved and coordinated with the city and local authorities. Come out for music, great speakers, food and a march around the police station and town square.
(Fox) – Swollen rivers gushed into the old section of Passau in southeast Germany on Monday, as water rose in the city to levels not seen in more than five centuries.
The city was one of the worst hit by flooding that has spread across a large area of central Europe following heavy rainfall in recent days. At least eight people were reported to have died and nine were missing due to floods in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Czech Republic.
What’s the number one reason we riot? The plausible, justifiable motivations of trampled-upon humanfolk to fight back are many—poverty, oppression, disenfranchisement, etc—but the big one is more primal than any of the above. It’s hunger, plain and simple. If there’s a single factor that reliably sparks social unrest, it’s food becoming too scarce or too expensive. So argues a group of complex systems theorists in Cambridge, and it makes sense.
(Peak Prosperity) – We bring back to the forefront an article from contributor Fernando “FerFAL” Aguirre. With the many new sources of turbulence in the financial system and many new unknowns of how our predicaments will play out, we can always look to the past for guidance. The following is an account from a long time Peak Prosperity member who has lived through economic collapse. FerFAL experienced the hyperinflationary destruction of Argentina’s economy in 2001 and continues to blog about his experiences and observations of its lingering aftermath. His website and his book Surviving the Economic Collapse offer windows into the probable outcomes to expect during a collapsing economy. Note: Our site’s What Should I Do? Guide offers specific guidance relevant to a number of the steps FerFAL recommends below. Review, Learn, and Get Prepared. Better a year early than a day late.
A new report from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) has weighed in with an educated guess about the Israeli military’s secretive nuclear weapons program, estimating the nation has around 80 “strategic” level nuclear weapons.
The estimate suggests 50 of the warheads are for Jericho II medium range missiles, with another 30 gravity bombs to be dropped from warplanes. The report says it is possible that smaller tactical nukes could also be in the nation’s arsenal.
