Sun Slings Largest Solar Flare Yet: Coronal Mass Ejection Hurtles to Earth

The sun has let loose its strongest flare yet today. Classified as a M6.5 flare, it was associated with an Earth-direction coronal mass ejection (CME), a solar phenomenon that can send billions of tons of solar particles into space and can reach our planet days later.

Solar flares are powerful bursts of radiation that can sling the harmful material through space toward Earth. Fortunately, this radiation cannot pass through our atmosphere to impact humans on the ground. However, it can sometimes disturb the atmosphere enough so that it disrupts radio signals.

Iran with roughly one percent of the world population owns more than 7 percent of the total global mineral reserves, a research report said Saturday.

Arkansas ExxonMobil oil spill even worse than thought

In order to force ExxonMobil’s cooperation in the investigation, McDaniel had to issue a subpoenafor the documents and data about the Pegasus pipeline. Earlier this week, the attorney general estimated that about 600 emergency responders were employed in the cleanup effort. Exxon on Wednesday said the number is closer to 700. With such a large crew and a cleanup effort that is “just not going great”, McDaniel had already predicted that the spill was no small matter.

“I hope they realize for the homeowners in this area, it is not small. It is catastrophic. For those who fear their drinking water, it is not great,” he said.

The proposed CISPA legislation has been criticized by the American Civil Liberties Union, Electronic Frontier Foundation, and major Internet companies including Reddit and Craigslist, who say the bill all but eliminates privacy online. Facebook withdrew its support for the bill in March, joining 30,000 other websites in their opposition.

6.7M: Earthquake near Papua New Guinea

A 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Papua New Guinea on Sunday, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

“Based on all available data, a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii,” the center said.

Russian depositors begin seizing property of Cypriot banks

A Russian depositor has filed suit for the seizure of all assets in Russia belonging to Laiki Bank of Cyprus, including its controlling stake in Russia’s Rosprombank, which may now hamper a Cypriot plan to sell off the shares.

Presnensky Court in Moscow has received a lawsuit from ‘Y. G. Borisov’ against Laiki Bank – which operates in Russia under the Cyprus Popular Bank brand – and Rosprombank, in which Cyprus owns a 50.4 percent stake.
