Were Adam And Eve Created Immortal?

Name: Mason
Question: Were the Adamic peoples originally supposed to have immortal bodies before their sin with Satan? Or is that idea, I think they call it “degeneration of mankind” or something, simply a tradition of man? Thank you for any insight, and for being a good watchman.

Answer: Thank you for the question Mason.

Church Tradition

Unfortunately, church tradition stems from the need to explain certain Biblical beliefs, though those beliefs typically fall short when we look at the Bible as a whole. The topic we will discuss today is one of them. The thing I always tell people, God’s Word never contradicts itself, that is how you can tell if you have the truth or not.

With that thought in mind, I want you to remember ‘a child does not bear the sin of his parents’, (Ezekiel 18:20). If Adam was formed immortal, the rest of the Adamites would have been as well, even to this day until they sinned. They would not bear the sin of Adam is the point.

I also want you to remember, “it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment,” (Hebrews 9:27). It is appointed that all men are born into the flesh and die, this is for us to determine if we are going to follow God or Satan, and that certainly included Adam as well.

Aside from the opening points, I want you to consider what some of these belief systems would mean. Some Bible teachers believe the earth was perfect, they believe there were no viruses or harmful bacteria until Adam’s sin. They believe there was no death whatsoever until Adam sinned. Of course, these are the same teachers who believe in a young earth.

Now I want you to think for just a moment, I want you to apply some good ol fashioned common sense and consider what all of this would mean…

The Fifth Day of Genesis

We know our Father created the animals on the Fifth and Sixth Day of Genesis. On the Fifth Day of Genesis, our Father created all of the sea creatures and fowls, (Genesis 1:20-23).

  • What exactly do you think the sharks were eating?
  • What were the whales eating?
  • What were the eagles eating?
  • What were the hawks eating?

Do we honestly believe they were eating buttercups?

Of course not, they were eating other fish. Fish were dying, fish were being born, we had the circle of life then, just as we do today.

The Sixth Day of Genesis

On the Sixth Day of Genesis, our Father created land-based animals, (Genesis 1:24-25). When He was complete, He created all of the races, this was far before Adam ever stepped on the scene, (Genesis 1:26-31).

So let me ask:

  • What did the lions eat?
  • What did the tigers eat?
  • What did the bears eat?

I guarantee you lions and tigers were not eating carrots with the bunny rabbits.

I think you get the point. All sea creatures, fowls and land-based animals existed before mankind was created on the Sixth Day, and certainly before Adam who was formed after the Sabbath Day. So without a doubt, we know there was death in the world before Adam. Nowhere in Scripture can we find God creating new animals after the formation of Adam.

Moreover, and this should go without saying, but all animals are able to reproduce themselves. So if there was no death in the world, populations would have exploded and overcrowed the earth.

So that is where the doctrine of man will lead you, down the road of confusion. That is why we must rightly divide the Word of Truth to ensure we properly understand His Word so there are no contradictions.

Adam Was Formed From The Dust

Turn your Bible with me to,

Genesis 2:7
7 “And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”

Adam was formed from the dust of the ground. This documents Adam was given a mortal body, a flesh body that was destined to perish.

What did God tell Adam?

Genesis 2:17
17 “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.”

Did you read that God had given Adam an immortal body until he messed up?

I did not read that.

God provided Adam with a body from the dust of the earth and said, in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die”. Our Father knew Adam, like all men in the flesh would eventually sin, and Adam would bring about his own downfall, (Romans 3:23).

We know the day being spoken of is a reference to one of God’s Days which is a thousand year period of time, (2 Peter 3:8). Adam lived to be 930 years old, effectively dying ‘in that day’, (Genesis 5:5). Scripture never indicates God changed the body of Adam, that is a fabrication of God’s Word. Adam was created from the dust, and he was always destined to return to it, (Genesis 3:19).

Genesis 3:22
22 “And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:”

God was not saying Adam was going to live forever in the flesh. God was saying if Adam did not accept Christ who is the Tree of Life, then Adam would not live forever with reference to Adam’s soul.

The Two Bodies

We just documented Adam was formed from the dust, he had a flesh body that was of the earth, he had a terrestrial body. For the sake of being complete, we must discuss the two bodies, the terrestrial and celestial body.

Turn your Bible with me to,

1 Corinthians 15:39
39 “All flesh is not the same flesh: but there is one kind of flesh of men, another flesh of beasts, another of fishes, and another of birds.”

Men are made of flesh, they always have been and they always will be during this earth age.

1 Corinthians 15:40
40 “There are also celestial bodies, and bodies terrestrial: but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another.”

There are two different types of bodies; celestial and terrestrial. God’s Word will explain.

1 Corinthians 15:41
41 “There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars: for one star differeth from another star in glory.”

We are simply being told each body; celestial and terrestrial has its own glory, it has its own positives.

1 Corinthians 15:42
42 “So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption:”

Now we begin to see the difference.

The terrestrial body which is the flesh body is sown in “corruption” (Strong’s: G5356) which simply means, “decay, ruin, perish”. However, it is raised “incorruption” (Strong’s: G861) which means the soul departs the flesh (terrestrial body) at death and is placed (raised) into the spiritual body (celestial body), which simply means the body has now taken on “immortality”, (Ecclesiastes 12:7). I said the body, not the soul.

The terrestrial body is mortal, it is flesh, while the celestial body is immortal, it is spiritual. Adam did not have an immortal body as he was sown from the earth, he was dust, flesh, terrestrial.

1 Corinthians 15:43
43It is sown in dishonour; it is raised in glory: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power:”

Our flesh body, the terrestrial body is sown or created in dishonor as it is ‘perishable’. However, we are raised in power after our death as we rise into our true body, the celestial body, the spiritual body that never gets sick, old or dies.

1 Corinthians 15:44
44 “It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.”

In this earth age, we are first given a natural body, when we pass on we obtain our spiritual body. The natural body is the terrestrial body, our flesh body of earth. The spiritual body is the celestial body, the spirit body of Heaven.

Let us nail down the point here.

1 Corinthians 15:45
45 “And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.”

Adam was made a living soul, that is a quote from Genesis 2:7.

Adam was “sown in corruption” occupying the terrestrial body that was formed from the earth. However, upon Adam’s death he was “raised in incorruption” into the celestial body that is spiritual and of Heaven.

1 Corinthians 15:46
46 “Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual.”

See the order here?

God’s Word clearly lays it out for us and even referenced Adam in the prior verse. Adam like all men was placed into a natural body first (flesh, terrestrial). When Adam died, he was raised into a spiritual body (celestial).

1 Corinthians 15:47
47 “The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven.”

We have a little translation work to do here. You will notice the sudden introduction to “The Lord from which is out of place as it has been added to the text. The subject is the “natural” and “spiritual” body, not the Lord Jesus Christ.

Further, if you open your Strong’s Concordance you will find the words “of” and “from” are both Strong’s G1537, yet the translators provided different translations of the word in the same sentence.

You will find the ASV and RV revisions of the Bible properly translate this verse as,

“The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is of heaven.”

That is the entire point; first we have a flesh body of earth, then (second) we obtain our spiritual body of Heaven.

We are first born into the flesh, and upon our passing, we are resurrected into our spiritual body.

1 Corinthians 15:48-49
48 “As is the earthy, such are they also that are earthy: and as is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly.”

49 “And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly.”

We are earthly, our body is comprised of the earth, not spirit, not until our passing. Therefore, it is not possible by any stretch of the imagination for us to ever think Adam possessed a spiritual body that was “incorruptible”. All men on earth possess a “corruptible” flesh body, until they pass on and inherit our true Eternal body that lasts forever, (body not soul).
