Is Christ Our Healer?
Welcome to Bible Question and Answer, our bi-weekly series where we provide Bible verses, answers and advice to the questions and concerns you have. During the course of the last two weeks readers have submitted their questions and today we are going to answer one of them.
Name: Adele Coulas
Question: A friend of mine is getting trained in Reiki and asked me if she could practice on me, I said no because I’m a Christian, because in my mind Christ is the healer, am I right?
Name: Brandon T. Ward
Answer: Adele, thank you for the question and you are absolutely correct, Christ is the Healer. There are numerous accounts of Jesus Christ not only healing people, but bringing people back to life who died in the flesh, (Luke 7:1-17, Matthew 8:14-17).
Where did Christ obtain this power?
Listen to the words of Jesus Christ,
“All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth.” – Matthew 28:18
Who gave Jesus Christ the power?
“The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into His hand.” – John 3:35
Our Heavenly Father, Jehovah has provided this power to Christ and our Father is the only entity with this power and authority, (John 13:3).
We can read in Exodus 15:26 that it is our Heavenly Father who is the Healer as well,
“I am the LORD that healeth thee.” – Exodus 15:26
Anytime you see “LORD” in all uppercase, know we are talking about the Father, Jehovah.
I mention all of this to document who has power in the universe and it is no one else but the Father, the Son and of course the Holy Spirit.
The Practice of Reiki
A general definition of Reiki so our readers can better understand what we are discussing:
“Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by “laying on hands” and is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one’s “life force energy” is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.
The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words – Rei which means “God’s Wisdom or the Higher Power” and Ki which is “life force energy”. So Reiki is actually “spiritually guided life force energy.”” – Reiki.org
If one is not performing a healing in the name of Jesus Christ, then you have to ask yourself what “higher power” is helping out? You cannot recieve a gift from God if you do not believe and stand with Him.
I am very familiar with “Reiki” which is practiced by some in the massage industry. Your question really hits home for me. I recently worked with a gentleman (who we will call Bob) who begin to practice Reiki.
I have to mention before Bob started practicing Reiki he made it very clear to us that he was trying to find his way in life considering his age. From my conversations with Bob he spent a fair amount of time learning about Reiki and of course practicing it.
There were several times at work when Bob claimed to have “powers“. Mind you, Bob is not an out in far left field type of guy.
A few of my other fellow co-workers claimed they could feel something coming from Bob when Bob told them to place their hands between his hands. One of those people was Christian and the other a Muslim and neither had any ties to Reiki.
Myself, I do not believe anyone can generate “power“, only One has that power as we already outlined, though evil spirits can make many things happen that we cannot understand.
One afternoon Bob comes up to me with both of his hands in a circle, as if he was holding a softball with both of his hands.
He said, “okay, there, I got it right now, (the power). Put your hand inside my hand“.
I looked at him and being as kind as I could placed my hand between both of his hands.
He said, “okay, what did you feel“?
I said, “well, I felt your hand when my hand touched yours“.
Ol Bob was not so happy about that, but some of my other co-workers sure got a laugh out of it.
So what about the two co-workers who claimed they felt something from Bob?
Why could they feel it and not myself or did they really feel anything at all?
I do not know the answer to those questions. I am a skeptic by nature and until I have an abundance of proof about a subject, it is just not believable to me.
Could this “power” have been an evil spirit acting on Bob’s part to make the others feel this so called “power“?
It could have been, though I will say, I never felt any evil in my work environment, nor do I think Bob is a bad person. Not that it should dismiss the notion.
I do know Satan wants to turn as many people away from God as he can, Satan certainly has some supernatural abilities and from Luke 8:29 it is apparent that even evil spirits do.
The take away here is, evil spirits in general can and will prey on an individual if they are seeking out some spiritual realm. They will play on that person and make them believe whatever it is they want to believe. I could tell you many more details about this and other such subjects, but I have already said far too much.
If it were me, I would not allow anyone to practice Reiki on me. Instead, I would open my Bible and turn to James 5:13-14 and anoint myself with olive oil just as I did to our work environment.
