The Fallen Angels, Giants And Noah’s Flood

When we think about Noah’s Flood, we often forget why there was a Flood in the first place. We are going to learn, the Fallen Angels left Heaven and married women producing children who were Giants (Nephilim). This multiplied wickedness in the land bringing about Noah’s Flood.

We should also understand, the Bible is basically about Adam, his family, and the people they encountered over the years. As we move through this Bible study, I want you to carefully read the Scriptures and look at the cause and effect as we progress through each verse.

Adam, Noah and Their Descendants

In order to set the stage for this study, we should understand Genesis 5-6 concerns genealogies, marriage, and the bearing of children. Christ made this point as well by explaining,

“…before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage”.

Matthew 24:38

In Genesis 5, we learn Noah and his family were descendants of Adam, (Adamites). Some of the Adamites would later be known as Hebrews who were eventually called Israelites, and they formed the 12 Tribes of Israel.

God has made it very clear, the Israelites,

“…art an holy people unto the LORD thy God: the LORD thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth” .

Deuteronomy 7:6

Yet, God does not play favorites, (Romans 2:11).

The reason for a chosen people was to provide God with a family He could lead, and direct in order to ensure His Word made it through the generations down to us today, (Acts 10:36, Mark 16:15).

If the Israelites had been left on their own, they would have failed miserably in their mission. We know from Scripture, God constantly intervened to keep them on course or bring them back from sin.

Even more important, Adam, Noah, and the Israelites would become the family in the flesh of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

The Daughters Of Adam

We will now turn our Bible to Genesis 6 which brings us to the time of Adam. We will not read about Noah’s day until verse 4. As you read, pay attention to the events that are transpiring, and ask why they occurred, and why are we being told about them.

Genesis 6:1
And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them.

Green's Interlinear Bible - The Word Man from Genesis 6:1 - Short Verse
Green’s Interlinear Bible: Full Verse of Genesis 6:1

Please read Did We All Come From Adam And Eve? to understand the Hebrew.

The first thing we must understand is the word “men” has been improperly translated. In English we have “men” which is plural, in the Hebrew manuscripts where our text came from, it is singular, denoted with the Hebrew “article” which adds “the” in front of the word “man”.

The Hebrew manuscripts make it clear, we are discussing “the man” previously mentioned in Scripture. “The man” we know as Adam from Genesis 5 where his genealogy was laid out. This is critical to understand.

We have to remember, our Heavenly Father created mankind (all races) on the Sixth Day of Genesis, while Adam was formed after the Sabbath Day, (Genesis 1:26-27, 2:5-7, see: Did We All Come From Adam And Eve? ).

This means, mankind from the Sixth Day of Genesis had sons and daughters for two thousand years before Adam was ever formed, (2 Peter 3:8).

All of these facts help us understand, Genesis 6:1 is discussing Adam and his descendants. When they began to multiply, we are specifically told “daughters were born unto them” being Adam and Eve.

Obviously, they could not multiply without “daughters”.

Yet, we are specifically told this which means our attention is being directed toward the female descendants of Adam for a very specific purpose, the bearing of children. This should really stand out to you. Women are not mentioned that often in Scripture, and when they are, there is typically a very important message within it.

The Word Earth

When we see the word “earth” in the Genesis account of Noah’s Flood, we should understand this translation comes from the Hebrew word “‘erets”. This word was translated as “land” 700 times more often than the word “earth”.

The decision to translate the Hebrew word “‘erets” as “earth” was done at the sole discretion of the Bible translators, the Hebrew does not dictate it. It was done no doubt due to the translator’s belief in a global flood.

When “‘erets” is translated as “land”, this removes contradictions the word “earth” introduces. As we explain in Was Noah’s Flood Global?, the Flood was local and confined to the “land” where Noah and his family lived, the “land” where wickedness had multiplied.

The Sons Of God Who Became Fallen Angels

Let us continue.

Genesis 6:2
That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.

Green's Interlinear Bible - The Word Man from Genesis 6:2 - Short Verse
Green’s Interlinear Bible: Full Verse of Genesis 6:2

“The sons of God” mentioned here are simply angels from Heaven, (Job 2:1).

These are not good Angels, but those who became Fallen Angels when they “kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation” which was Heaven. Due to that, the Fallen Angels have been placed “in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day”, (Jude 1:6).

We also need to understand “men” has once again been mistranslated. In the Hebrew manuscripts, the “article” is present indicating we are discussing “the man” previously mentioned which was Adam (and his descendants) as explained prior.

The Fallen Angels Married Adam’s Daughters (Descendants)

God’s Word is telling us, the Fallen Angels married the daughters of Adam who were “fair“, which means “beautiful”.

Why did these angels leave Heaven, signing their own death sentence in order to marry the daughters of Adam (and his descendants)?

The “beauty” of Adam’s daughters was certainly not the only reason. There was no doubt many beautiful women on earth, including the descendants of mankind created on the Sixth Day of Genesis.

So why focus on the daughters of Adam, and why take wives?

The reason was to pervert and destroy the genealogy of Adam in order to prevent the birth of the Messiah, Jesus Christ. Remember, Christ’s genealogy is traced to Adam and Eve. What we have just read was the second attack by Satan and his angels on the family of Adam.

The first attack is recorded in Genesis 2:25-3:7 and is completely explained in our Bible study, The Story Of Adam And Eve In The Garden Of Eden.

There is no doubt, once Adam was formed and placed into the Garden of Eden, Satan knew Adam would be the father of the family who was “chosen” by God. Through this family would come Jesus Christ. This led to the sin in the Garden of Eden.

Further, Satan was well aware of the first prophecy in Scripture, which states the child of the woman, being Jesus Christ will come to “bruise” the head of the Serpent being Satan, (Genesis 3:15, Revelation 12:9).

Satan and his angels were trying to prevent this from transpiring in order to preserve Satan, and destroy God’s Plan of Salvation.

The Fallen Angels Children Were Giants

Genesis 6:4
There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

Green's Interlinear Bible - The Word Man from Genesis 6:4 - Short Verse
Green’s Interlinear Bible: Full Verse of Genesis 6:4

“The sons of God” mentioned here are still the Fallen Angels, and “the daughters of men” still has the Hebrew article denoting “the man”. This ensures we are still discussing the daughters of “the man” Adam and his descendants.

We now know, sometime after Adam had children (and his descendants), specifically daughters, the Fallen Angels left Heaven and came to earth to take the Adamite daughters as wives. This unholy and unnatural matrimony of the Fallen Angels caused the daughters of Adam to “bare children to” the Fallen Angels which brought about Giants (Nephilim).

The wickedness in the “land” had just multiplied exponentially.

Again, this was done in an attempt to destroy the genealogy of the Adamites so Genesis 3:15 could not be fulfilled, preventing the very birth of Jesus Christ, and destroying Salvation for the world. Our Lord and Savior could not be born into a polluted and unholy genealogy, He was to be “without blemish, without spot”, (1 Peter 1:19).

Scripture tells us, the Giants were at least 9 feet tall, and were “mighty men“, meaning “powerful, tyrant, champion”, (1 Samuel 17:4-7). They were of “old“, meaning “ancient time”, and they were men of “renown” or men of “name”.

The Giants had made a name for themselves due to their immense size, strength, and wickedness. The only “ancient time” they could have been from was “the world that then was,” which means, they possibly had knowledge of that former age, (2 Peter 3:6).

We should also note, “the man” Adam passed away at least 100 years before the birth of Noah. The Flood did not transpire until Noah was 600 years old, (Genesis 7:6). This means the Giants lived in the “land” for hundreds and hundreds of years before God sent the Flood.

Fallen Angels And Giants Caused Multiplied Wickedness

Genesis 6:5
And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

Green's Interlinear Bible - The Word Man from Genesis 6:5 - Short Verse
Green’s Interlinear Bible: Full Verse of Genesis 6:5

There was already wickedness in the “land” where the Adamites lived. We know this as Enoch was preaching against it during the time of Adam, (Jude 1:14-15).

Therefore, the wickedness of man was not “great“, but “multiplied”. In fact, the root word for “great” can mean “to multiply by the myriad” and a myriad is “ten thousand”. God’s Word is telling us wickedness had become ‘multiplied by the tens of thousands’.

This was obviously due to the presence of the Fallen Angels, and their children the Giants in the “land” where the Adamites lived. Not only were they destroying the genealogy of the Adamites through marriage and childbirth, but they also brought great evils with them which had spread sin throughout the “land”.

God Sent The Flood To Destroy The Giants

Genesis 6:7
And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.

Green's Interlinear Bible - The Word Man from Genesis 6:7 - Short Verse
Green’s Interlinear Bible: Full Verse of Genesis 6:7

We are going to break this verse down so we understand exactly what is transpiring, and who will be affected.

The first use of the word “man” in verses 6-7 has the Hebrew “article” and “particle”. This specifically denotes “the man” previously mentioned which was “the man” Adam and his descendants. The Hebrew manuscripts have spelled this out since verse 1.

The second use of the word “man” in verse 7 is not directed toward Adam or his family, but is simply the word “man” without the Hebrew “article” or “particle”. This lets us know we are talking about mankind in general, and of course, the Giants who were a perverted form of mankind.

God is explaining to us, there were other people in the region as well, who all sinned, and fell away from God.

The next thing we need to understand is the word earth is “‘ădâmâh” in Hebrew meaning,

“Soil (from its general redness): – country, earth, ground, husband [-man] (-ry), land“.

God is simply explaining He is going to destroy everyone in the “land” due to the “multiplied” wickedness that was brought about by the Fallen Angels and Giants.

Notice, God also explains He will destroy the animals of the “land” as well. Yet, the animals did not do anything wrong, this obviously points to the fact of how disgusted God was with the sin that took place in the region.

In our Father’s eyes, the entire region was polluted by the presence of the Fallen Angels and Giants, and the “land” had to be cleansed.

This really should not surprise us.

You may recall when God told the Israelites to destroy the inhabitants of the land of Canaan, the land He granted to them. God said, “thou shalt save alive nothing that breatheth”, (Deuteronomy 20:16).

No doubt, to God, the entire region was unclean, and He wanted a fresh start.

As Scripture proclaims, “there is no new thing under the sun”, (Ecclesiastes 1:9).

Noah’s Descendants Did Not Marry Fallen Angels

Genesis 6:8
But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.

If it were not for Noah, everyone in the entire region would have been destroyed, but Noah was found worthy of redemption. Noah and his family were the only Adamites that did not partake of the sin in the “land”.

This was critical, as through Noah’s son Shem, would come our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, (Luke 3:23-38).

Genesis 6:9
These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God.

Let’s break this down.

Perfect” means “without blemish, without spot” and we know our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is the Lamb “without blemish and without spot”, (1 Peter 1:19).

Generations” means “posterity” which is “all future generations of people”.

Notice how genealogy is continually brought into the Genesis 6 account of Noah’s Flood.

Why did Noah find grace in the eyes of God?

He was a “just” man which means “righteous”, and he was “perfect in his generations“.

This means Noah (Adam’s descendant) and his family did not intermarry with the Fallen Angels or Giants. That is why Noah’s family was “without blemish, without spot in their posterity”. This is why Noah and his family were selected by God, and saved from the Flood God sent on the region, (2 Peter 2:4).

Summary

Through careful study of the Bible, we now understand Noah’s Flood was due to the Fallen Angels taking the daughters of Adam (and his descendant’s daughters) as wives. This unholy affair led to the birth of Giants which “multiplied” the wickedness in the “land”.

The Fallen Angels did this in an attempt to pollute and pervert the genealogy of the Adamites, preventing the birth of Christ, and destroying God’s Plan of Salvation.

Noah and his family were spared from the Flood as they remained “righteous”, and their genealogy was “perfect”, as they did not intermarry with the Fallen Angels.

God then sent the Flood to purge the “land” of the sinful union with Fallen Angels, which resulted in Giants as progeny. Everyone else who took part in the “wickedness” in the “land” was included in this.

No doubt, it was at this time when these Fallen Angels became bound,

“…in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day”.
