Question: Thank you for serving God through your blog. Can you describe spiritual warfare? I strongly feel I have been attacked at 2 different points in my life; both in which I was serving the Lord in a more bold way. It doesn’t scare me because I have God’s protection and love, but I would really like to understand it better.
Name: Brandon T. Ward
Answer: Thank you for the question Michelle.
Spiritual warfare is essentially Satan and his angels (evil spirits) intervening in peoples life in a negative way.
I believe there are a couple different categories to spiritual warfare. One is very broad and the other is very personal.
Broadly we see spiritual warfare playing out daily on a global level. We were told in 2 Timothy 3:1-5 and 2 Peter 3:3-4 that during the last days wickedness in the world would increase and we are witnessing that with each passing day. A great example is homosexual marriage which is now legal in 33 of the 50 states, (update: Abomination: The United States Becomes As Sodom And Gomorrah).
Spiritual warfare on a personal level consists of what you described, personal attacks which are caused by evil spirits. I have never experienced one of these attacks myself, but I do have close friends that have. One friend explained when they were trying to apply God’s Word to their life they were spiritually attacked violently.
Not all attacks are violent however. Someone of them can feel very positive.
One friend explained they truly thought it was God who was talking to them and comforting them as well. Even to the degree of making them feel very warm inside. They were so moved they told me about it the same day, but things quickly did not add up during our conversation. I explained to them it was not God telling them those things and explained why.
Later that night this person became terrified because they could feel something trying to overcome them is how it was described. I demanded with authority the evil spirit leave the individual and the home in the name of Jesus Christ.
It is extremely important to understand, we have no power by ourselves. We have power through the name of Jesus Christ, His Name carries the weight and made it possible. We then prayed together and I anointed (with olive oil) the home and the individual as well in the name of Jesus Christ (James 5:14).
From my experience, spiritual attacks come upon new believers or Christians trying to get closer to our Father and that is one of the last things Satan wants to see happen.
As you said though Michelle, we have God’s protection and should not be afraid (Deuteronomy 31:6, Isaiah 41:10, Psalms 27: “Whom Shall I Fear?”).
Instead, we should go on the offensive and order out the evil in the name of Jesus Christ boldly and with authority.
Let us open our Bibles and read about spiritual warfare and how we can be prepared for it.
10 “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.”
First, we must be strong in the Lord.
We must be a spiritual warrior for Christ strong enough to fend off the enemy. You may recall the account of the men who tried to cast out evil spirits in the name of Jesus Christ. It did not work, because they lacked faith and instead were overcome by those same evil spirits (Acts 19:13-16). We must be strong and firm in our beliefs and let wickedness know we will not be shaken or intimidated because we have Jesus Christ on our side. We boldly demand with authority and order out any evil in our homes and lives in the name of Jesus Christ.
11 “Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.”
This is not physical armour, but spiritual armor and we wear it in order to stand again Satan.
12 “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”
Spiritual warfare. We put on the armour of God for this fight.
13 “Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.”
Ultimately, we will wear this armour during the Tribulation of Satan.
14 “Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;”
Verse 14-17 will document we are talking about spiritual items that we must possess in order to stand against Satan.
15 “And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;”
That Gospel of peace is the Word of God.
16 “Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.”
We quench the fiery darts of the wicked with our shield of faith. If we only have a little faith we are not going to stop many darts. We need to be strong in our faith and resolute.
17 “And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:”
We can also read about this sword in Revelation 1:12-16 and Revelation 19:15 among other places. This sword is the Word of God and the truth of His Word cuts both ways. It is the sword we can always count on to conquer our enemies.
