7 Things God Hates

There are seven things God hates, these are known as the seven deadly sins, but all sins are deadly. In fact, Romans 6:23 tells us, “the wages of sin is death” without repentance, (2 Chronicles 7:14, Acts 3:19).

While God is love, God certainly hates, and He even tells us there is a time for each, (1 John 4:16).

A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.

Ecclesiastes 3:8

All right, let’s now read the seven things God hates, and then we will discuss each of them by tying in additional Bible verses. As we read, make sure to notice, the things that God despises start from the top of the man, and work down until they consume the entire man.

Things God Hates

Proverbs 6:16-19
16 These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:

17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,

18 An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,

19 A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

1. God Hates Haughty Eyes

Psalms 10:4
The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts.

Self pride is a tremendous deadly sin.

In fact, in Proverbs 6:17, “proud” means “exalt” and “haughty” which is arrogance. God is completely against those who display pride and arrogance as they do not seek after God.

Rather, they only concern themselves with their needs and desires. This is why “God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble”, (1 Peter 5:5).

Ironically enough, this was Satan’s sin when he exalted himself above God. When Satan said, “I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High”, (Isaiah 14:14).

2. God Hates A Lying Tongue

Proverbs 12:22
Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight.

God hates liars as they cannot be trusted or counted on.

Further, a liar intends to deceive others. This is yet another deadly sin and trait of Satan who is the father of all lies, (John 8:44). If we become a liar, then it means we are walking the same path as Satan who is already destined to the Lake of Fire, (Isaiah 14:15).

Instead of following after Satan and darkness, we are to follow after Jesus and Light.

When we lie, we become an abomination to God and liars will not inherit the Kingdom of God. If we do not inherit the Kingdom of God, then we will inherit the Lake of Fire with Satan, (Revelation 21:8).

3. God Hates Hands That Shed Innocent Blood

Isaiah 59:3
For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue hath muttered perverseness.

Hands that are defiled with blood describe sinful murders.

These are they who “lie in wait” which means to “ambush” and kill the innocent, (Micah 7:2). This even includes abortion, as a baby is an innocent life, (Jeremiah 20:17). Today, we are told abortion is a choice. It certainly is, but one we will answer to God for.

Deuteronomy 19:10-13 tells us,

“Innocent blood be not shed in thy land… If any man hate his neighbour, and lie in wait for him, and rise up against him, and smite him mortally that he die” then he should be put to death.

Further, Deuteronomy 27:25 explains, “Cursed be he that taketh reward to slay an innocent person.”

4. God Hates A Heart That Devises Wicked Plans

Zechariah 8:17
And let none of you imagine evil in your hearts against his neighbour; and love no false oath: for all these are things that I hate, saith the LORD.

Also: Mark 7:21-23

Those who devise evil plans are sinners and the enemies of God and His People.

God absolutely hates those who seek to destroy others for their own benefit. Further, we should never give a false oath which even means providing a false witness against someone.

We certainly should never make promises we cannot keep. When we break our word, that is a reflection of us as individuals and Christians.

Micah 2:1-2 tells us,

“Woe to them that devise iniquity, and work evil upon their beds!” Truly wicked people lay awake at night plotting how to destroy others in order to enhance their own life.

“They covet fields, and take them by violence; and houses, and take them away: so they oppress a man and his house, even a man and his heritage.” These are not only individuals, but governments and corporations who seek excessive gain at the expense of others.

5. God Hates Feet That Are Swift To Run To Mischief

Isaiah 59:7
Their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed innocent blood: their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; wasting and destruction are in their paths.

People whose feet run to evil have no righteousness in their sinful hearts.

Their thoughts are consumed by wickedness and how they may gain more for themselves through the destruction of others.

If we are not careful, we can get caught up with these people and their plans by associating with the wrong crowd. Also, by not standing against promoted agendas and ideologies that are anti-Christian.

2 Peter 2:1-3 tells us wicked people can even appear in the form of Christian “teachers” who “through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you.”

This means, through fraud “false teachers” will steal from you while distorting the Word of God at the same time. Today, we see this tactic constantly used to alter Christianity to fit in with the ways of the world.

6. God Hates A False Witness Who Speaks Lies

Proverbs 19:9
A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall perish.

A false witness is a liar who deceives others in order to incriminate someone.

People will do this to stir up strife or for their own gain and betterment. Never provide a false witness, and always ensure you hear both sides of a story before stating your opinion.

Matthew 26:59 tells us,

“The chief priests, and elders, and all the council, sought false witness against Jesus, to put him to death.”

These sinful religious teachers devised wicked plans to destroy Jesus as His deeds were righteous. He was drawing large crowds which naturally meant these people were not showing up to “church.” Some of the most wicked acts come from so-called “religious people.”

7. God Hates Those Who Sow Discord Among The Brethren

Proverbs 16:28
A froward man soweth strife: and a whisperer separateth chief friends.

A “froward” man is someone who ‘defrauds’ others through deception and wicked intent.

These types of people are “whispers” who “slander” others which divides friendships and destroys Christian communities. We must be careful not to partake in these acts by gossiping or giving an ear to it.

James 3:14-16 tells us, bitter envy and strife, “This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.”

We cannot lift up our fellow brothers and sisters through bitter envy and strife. These things only seek to divide our families, friendships, and churches.
