Should Christians Celebrate Halloween?

Christians are not going to find Halloween directly mentioned in the Bible. However, you will find it referenced by the Wiccans and embraced by the church of Satan. In fact, Halloween is one of just two holidays celebrated by Devil worshippers.

Now, why do you suppose witches and supporters of Satan enjoy Halloween?

It’s surrounded in darkness.

The Origins Of Halloween

Halloween originates from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. Samhain marked the first day of winter for the ancient Celtic people. Yet, on October 31st, just the night before, they believed,

The boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of October 31 they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth.

History

So we find Halloween is a celebration of the dead.

In fact, the Celts burned crops and animals as sacrifices to the Celtic gods on this night.

It was actually known as the “Day of the Dead.” A day focused on evil spirits coming to earth to terrorize the people. The Celts would dress up in order to hide from the evil spirits or blend in with them.

The scarier the costumes, the better, in order not to be taken by an evil spirit.

Halloween’s Priests

The Celts also believed, since the spirit and natural world blended together on this night, it was easier for their Druid priests to make predictions about the future.

Do you know the word “Druid” means,

A priest, magician, or soothsayer in the ancient Celtic religion.

Now these Druid priests were not priests of God.

They were priests of darkness and evil, surrounded by dark magic. These Druid priests performed human sacrifice. Further, a “soothsayer” is someone who through divine intervention (divination) can see into the future.

That divine intervention does not come from God, but through evil spirits.

What does God have to say about that?

What Does The Bible Say About Halloween?

Let’s read what God told the Israelites long ago, concerning the people who lived in the land the Israelites were about to inherit.

Deuteronomy 18:9-10
9 When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations.

10 There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch,

God said do not learn the ways of the heathen, (Jeremiah 10:2).

God said do not use “divination.” The very word even references, “the Celtic art of divination” that we have been talking about.

  • God said do not be an “observer of times.”
  • God said do not be an “enchanter.”
  • God said do not be a “witch.”

All of these words have to do with spell casting and spiritual divination.

That is exactly what Halloween is based on.

Why would Christians want to be associated with things God hates?

Now, God figured we might need a little more help on this subject.

So God continues telling us what we are not to do or even be associated with.

Deuteronomy 18:11
Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.

God said do not be a charmer, or consult “familiar spirits” which would be evil spirits. Nor a wizard or a “necromancer.”

Do you realize, “necromancy” is,

The practice of communicating with the dead, especially in order to predict the future.

God does not want us using spells, or attempting to consult spirits in order to predict the future. No wonder the Wiccans and Satanists enjoy this night.

All of this clearly defines the origins of Halloween.

Listen to your Heavenly Father.

Deuteronomy 18:12-14
12 For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee.

13 Thou shalt be perfect with the LORD thy God.

14 For these nations, which thou shalt possess, hearkened unto observers of times, and unto diviners: but as for thee, the LORD thy God hath not suffered thee so to do.

God was abhorred by the practices of the people who possessed the land. The land that would become Israel. God fully intended to drive out all of these wicked people from the land.

Even through the sword, (Deuteronomy 20:16).

That is how much God detests these practices. Further, we, Christians are to be as perfect as possible, and adhere to what God likes, and what God dislikes.

God is our family, why would we want to disrespect our family by honoring a holiday like Halloween?

A holiday based on spells, and contacting evil spirits in order to determine the future.

Halloween Is The Way Of The World

I can already hear some people…

Ahh, Brandon, lighten up. It’s for the kids.

You know, people always use that line so they don’t have to take responsibility. So they don’t have to make a stand against the world and what God hates. People use the same line for Santa and the Easter bunny, which are celebrated and honored more than Jesus.

Because hey, we were doing it for the kiddos right?

That reminds me…

In Christianity’s attempt to convert pagans like the Celts and their Druid priests, they brought pagan practices into the church. Church leaders repurposed Samhain (Halloween) as a Christian celebration.

In fact, Pope Gregory III moved “All Saints Day” from May to November 1st, and with it came the pagan practices of Samhain (Halloween).

Today we do it for the kiddos, back then they did it to fill the pews.

Not much changed, did it?

I might add, who was converted?

Do Not Walk As The Gentiles

My friends, as Christians, Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior told us we are to separate ourselves from the world, (John 15:19). Just like Jehovah, our Heavenly Father told the Israelites to be separate from the people of the land.

Listen to God’s Word.

Ephesians 4:17
This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,

This is what God has told us since the beginning.

“Learn not the way of the heathen,” (Jeremiah 10:2).

Why?

“For the customs of the people are vain,” (Jeremiah 10:3).

The traditions of the Gentiles are vain.

The Gentiles, that would be non-believers walk in the ways of the world. They have “vanity,” “moral depravity” of the mind, which means “moral corruption and wickedness.”

They,

Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:

Ephesians 4:18

The Gentiles do not walk after God as they do not know Him. They only walk after the wicked and dark ways of the world. They do these things in ignorance, even celebrating Godless holidays like Halloween.

But you, you know better.

The Ways Of The World Are Foolish To God

1 Corinthians 3:19
For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.

The world thinks it’s okay to celebrate Halloween as its done innocently.

Yet, through innocence is how we always manage to separate ourselves from God.

I want you to think about something…

When Satan tempted Jesus in the wilderness, Satan did not come to Jesus with a club and demand Christ worship him. Rather, Satan came innocently, using his own wisdom and even distorting Scripture, (Matthew 4:1-11).

Essentially, Satan came to sweet talk Christ into obeying him. Satan came to convince Jesus through vain words to listen to him and worship him.

The same thing takes place today.

We are told by the world to celebrate holidays like Halloween and that it is okay. Yet, we find the origins and traditions of Halloween are steeped in the things God hates, and the things God told us not to partake of.

After learning these things, how is Halloween even tempting for Christians who love and want to honor God?
