The Tower Of Babel In The Modern Era

As mankind moves further down the pathway of time, we find mankind repeating mistakes from the past. Many of us are familiar with the Tower of Babel. It was an early point in human history when Nimrod (through Noah > Ham > Cush) established the city of Babel in the plain of Shinar, which is just another name for Babylon, (Genesis 10:9-10).

The Tower of Babel

As Genesis 11:1 explains, “the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech”. Since the people were of one language, there was no barrier that prevented them from working together.

The people went on to say,

Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.

Genesis 11:4

This was the Tower of Babel.

It was built so mankind could “make us a name”. The word “name” even means, “a mark or memorial of individuality” as in, separate from God by claiming their independence from Him.

Under Nimrod’s leadership, the people were openly rebelling against God, just as they do today.

As God looked upon the city, and this tower He said,

Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.

Genesis 11:6

As God stated, when people work together, they can accomplish anything they can imagine. The Tower of Babel was the first example of that, unfortunately, it was in rebellion of God.

So God ‘confounded their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech, and the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city’, (Genesis 11:7-8).

The Progression Of Mankind

That marked the end of the Tower of Babel, and since that time the languages of men have prevented them from working together. That is, until the modern era where we can instantly translate any language with a device in the palm of our hand.

We have seen more technological advancement in the last 100 years than all of human history combined. It seems as each year goes by, technology increases so rapidly, some of us have a hard time keeping up.

In fact, three spacecraft from three separate nations will reach the orbit of the planet Mars in just weeks, and two of them will touchdown on the red planet to explore it.

Fighting For The Heavens

This all came to mind the other day after I saw a headline that read, “Earth’s richest men fight for the heavens”. It was about Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk, the two richest men in the world who begin to bicker over space as they both work to launch a satellite based global internet system.

Bezos concern?

He might miss the latest cash cow, as if money is an object to either of these two boys.

A Modern Tower of Babel

It was just a few days later when I read that Bezos is planning to build a brand new Amazon headquarters in Virginia called, “The Helix”. The building is not only modern, but mimics the appearance of the Tower of Babel that we have painted in our mind.

I always find things like this interesting to observe. I feel it is a sign of the times as men grow further a part from God and attempt to “make a name for themselves”, just like mankind did at the Tower of Babel.

You know what happened shortly after that…

“The LORD came down,” (Genesis 11:5-8).

Other Tower of Babel Examples

However, Bezos new headquarter design is certainly not the first attempt to mimic the Tower of Babel. The headquarters of the Bank of International Settlements, considered the central bank of central banks, has a similar appearance to the ancient tower.

The European Union Parliament building also mimics the Tower of Babel. Notice, it appears unfinished, just as the Tower of Babel was never completed, (Genesis 11:8).

Further, many years ago the European Union promoted a poster depicting the Tower of Babel and the phrase, “Europe: Many tongues, one voice”.

Worse yet, the European Union has many other Biblical symbols such as the woman riding the beast from the book of Revelation. This same symbol is minted on their coins and currency.

If the Bible is not true as many believe, why are these global organizations so bent on mimicking these Biblical symbols of globalization?

Mankind Reaching For The Stars

Days after reading about Bezos new headquarters, I read that back in October of 2020, the United States and seven other nations signed the Artemis Accords.

These accords govern how nations,

Observe a set of principles ranging from the interoperability of space hardware to the protection of heritage sites and space property rights.

While Russia and China have not joined, Russia and the United States have coordinated for years on the International Space Station. Much of this is due to the Outer Space Treaty of 1967 and the new Artemis Accords are tied to it.

I jumped over to the NASA website which explains, through the Artemis program

“NASA will land the first woman and the next man on the Moon by 2024”, this “will play a key role in achieving a sustainable and robust presence on the Moon while preparing to conduct a historic human mission to Mars.”

The first woman in history will land on the moon in 2024, followed by a historic human mission to Mars in 2030, exciting!

However, mankind continues these endeavors to ‘make a name for themselves’, refusing to give honor and glory to God.

The Artemis Accords continues,

The Artemis Accords will describe a shared vision for principles, grounded in the Outer Space Treaty of 1967, to create a safe and transparent environment which facilitates exploration, science, and commercial activities for all of humanity to enjoy.

“A shared vision for all of humanity”.

The Tower of Babel should have just come back over your mind. Through one speech they formed a shared vision to build a tower in order to make a name for themselves.

The Artemis Accords share the same goal as the Tower of Babel. The logo for the Artemis Accords even resembles the tower as the logo swirls its way to the heavens.

We are simply witnessing a modern version of the Tower of Babel continue to build and unfold before our eyes. Nowhere will you find mankind giving honor and glory to God for these achievements. Instead, we are glorifying and honoring ourselves, just as in the days of old.

Mankind Gives Honor To The gods

As I thought about these things, I decided to look up the word “Artemis” to see if I could glean anymore details on this subject.

As it turns out, “Artemis” is

A goddess, daughter of Zeus and sister of Apollo. She was a huntress and is typically depicted with a bow and arrows.

That was when I recalled that Nimrod who established the Tower of Babel “was a mighty hunter,” just as the false god Artemis, (Genesis 10:9).

Once again, there is nothing new under the sun.

In the days of old, mankind attempted to ‘make a name’ for themselves by constructing the Tower of Babel. This was to create a “memorial of individuality” which marked their independence from God.

Today, mankind rejects God more than ever before. We give credit to creation for creating itself (evolution), rather than honoring the Creator of creation, (Isaiah 45:12).

Mankind then forms accords that honor false gods which do not exist, instead of honoring the One True God that does. Mankind does this today, as before, to “make a name” for themselves. To create a “memorial of individuality” in order to mark our independence from the God of Heaven and earth.

Only this time around, mankind has reached the heavens in a bold show that we are no longer confined to the earth where God placed us, but that we may now traverse the heavens that were once unreachable.

Considering these facts, and how society pushes what little remains of God out of their lives, we must ask the question…

How much longer, until ‘the Lord comes down’, (Genesis 11:5-8, Revelation 19)?
