Happy Birthday America

Today, our nation turns 244 years old. A nation rooted in God, in fact, the only nation in the world to have its founding documents based on God and His Word. Our forefathers often cited God in their works, and explained, He was the foundation of our Bill of Rights and Constitution.

These documents founded on Biblical principals set the stage for the most successful nation in world history. That is no surprise when you have God on your side.

When we think about our nation, the word “freedom” quite literally rings in our ear. Yet, we far too often take this word for granted.

Freedom is not free.

In fact, freedom does and has required the awesome price of death and destruction. Our ancestors suffered greatly losing their sons, daughters, wives, property, and their own lives so a future generation could be and remain free.

We are that future generation.

Our ancestors and those before us suffered so we could live, thrive, and succeed. As I write this, I feel a tug on my heart for those who lived before me who were so selfless, those who gave everything in hopes that we, the future people could live free and happy. I feel it is our duty to protect what they died for and honor their cause, causes founded under Almighty God.

A Speech

Nearly 100 years ago, President Calvin Coolidge, the 30th President of these United States gave an inspiring and truth-filled speech. These words by Mr. Coolidge struck me this morning.

A spring will cease to flow if its source be dried up; a tree will wither if its roots be destroyed. In its main features, the Declaration of Independence is a great spiritual document. It is a declaration not of material but of spiritual conceptions. Equality, liberty, popular sovereignty, the rights of man — these are not elements which we can see and touch. They are ideals. They have their source and their roots in the religious convictions. They belong to the unseen world. Unless the faith of the American people in these religious convictions is to endure, the principles of our Declaration will perish. We cannot continue to enjoy the result if we neglect and abandon the cause.

Entire Calvin Coolidge Speech

The “cause” is our religious convictions, properly said, the Christian faith. If we depart from it, our ideals, our Declaration, our founding documents will perish, and with it, our “freedom”.

Independence Day Is About Remembering Sacrifice

Independence Day is more than a beer or glass of wine, it is more than the smoke of fireworks. It is about remembering and honoring those of the past who died so we could live and govern ourselves.

So we could worship our Heavenly Father how and when we choose. So we could decide who would lead our towns, cities, states, and country. I feel far too often as a people we have placed America in cruise control as if our documents have the ability to protect themselves…

This Independence Day, I want you to remember the sacrifices of those before us, I want you to remember that America was founded by good men who died for causes they believed in so we could be free.
