Fight The Good Fight Of Faith

Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.

1 Timothy 6:12

Our “faith” is our “moral conviction,” it is our “reliance upon Christ for salvation.” If we are morally convicted to follow Him, then it means we commit our lives to Jesus.

It sounds easy enough.

Yet, faith and belief are not idle thoughts we possess. When we have faith and believe in something, it means we actually take action. This is where “works” come into play.

We are saved by faith, but rewarded by our works, (Matthew 16:27, Ephesians 2:8).

Fight The Good Fight

Typically, when we read this verse, we just think about accepting Jesus Christ and obtaining the promise of Eternal Life.

However, what was the first word in the verse?

Fight.”

That requires action and the very word means,

To struggle, literally (to compete for a prize), figuratively (to contend with an adversary), or generally (to endeavor to accomplish something): – fight, labor fervently, strive.

By definition then, faith requires some form of action in order to obtain Eternal Life.

As James told us, “faith without works is dead,” (James 2:20, 26).

So each and every day, we have “to struggle” to “compete” for the prize of Eternal Life. Each and every day, our faith is tested by the world, and our “adversary” who is Satan, (1 Peter 5:8). The world tells us to partake in the things of the world; they are good, wholesome, and inclusive to all.

However, those are just the Devil’s words being murmured into our ears. Words that tempt us, just as Satan tempted Jesus in the wilderness, (Matthew 4:1-11).

Taking Action

If you read all of 1 Timothy 6, you will discover it’s about stepping up to the plate and doing something for Jesus Christ.

  • It’s not about holding a belief in private.
  • It’s not about passing the work off to someone else.
  • It’s about picking up the shovel and doing the work yourself.

For example, in verse 10 we are told, “the love of money is the root of all evil.” Some Christians have gone after wealth, and this led them away from the Lord. You always have to hold tight to your first love, Jesus Christ.

I want to share verse 17 with you.

1 Timothy 6:17
Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;

Charge them that are rich.”

That doesn’t mean send them a bill!

It means, to “declare” and “transmit a message” to the rich of the world. We are to communicate to them, accept Jesus Christ, and be rich in good works.

How on earth can we do such a thing if we sit idle?

How can we accomplish this Biblical task if we sit around and wait for someone else to do it?

Be Accountable

You know, life and Christianity are all about accountability.

It is all about you stepping up to the plate and taking action.

I fear many Christians these days just watch the world spin by each day.

I fear many Christians never consider that we must “fight” and “charge” our enemy.

Far too often, we just expect Jesus to pop out of the sky to accomplish the mission He asked us to do, (Matthew 16:15). Or we feel, someone else will do the heavy lifting for us. God’s Word never said that though.

My friends, having faith not only means taking action, it means understanding what your faith is all about. It means understanding more than just John 3:16, and it means understanding more than the book of Revelation.

Fighting the good fight of faith is about standing up against our adversary.

Fighting the good fight of faith is about removing the tools and temptations of our enemy from within our households.

Fighting the good fight of faith is about promoting Christianity, and that which is right and true.
