A Soft Answer Turns Away Wrath

Proverbs 15:1
1
“A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.”

This verse is a great reminder for us to humble our tongues.

In life, we will encounter situations where we are fired up, or upset with someone. With our emotions raging we want to go “unload” on them to get our point across.

These are the moments that define us, the moments that paint a picture of our Christianity. It is these moments that we need to let our anger subside before we address a person or situation. Then we can address the situation calmly when we are in control of our emotions. Always bring your Father into it, ask Him to intervene and assist you with this.

Proverbs 15:2
2 “The tongue of the wise useth knowledge aright: but the mouth of fools poureth out foolishness.

It is only natural to become upset at times and let someone know about it, however, there is a difference between allowing your natural emotions to flow and allowing your mouth to pour out foolishness.

I have been in this situation many times.

I could see the other party was extremely upset, I could have unleashed “grievous words” toward the individual, but it would not have helped my cause. Instead, I used ‘soft words’ and the individual calmed down and was able to listen to what I had to say.

Always do your best to keep cool and stay calm. You will find, not only will you get your point across, but the other party will hear your point and calm down themselves. Then both of you can begin communicating without anyone disregarding the other person’s point of view.

When we start shouting or using words in anger, the other party stops listening to you and goes on the defensive. Then you both lose the argument.

Take our Father’s advice, it heaps great rewards.
