The Great Commandment

Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

Matthew 22:37

Jesus told us, this is the first and greatest commandment of all. Christ made this statement when a lawyer of the law (Pharisee) asked Him, “Which is the great commandment in the law?”

Matthew 22:39
And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

Out of the entire Bible, in just two sentences, Jesus summarized the most critical aspects for Christians to remember and live by.

Love God with everything you have, and love your neighbor as yourself.

Matthew 22:40
On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Out of the entire Bible, those are the two critical points to live by.

You know why?

If you adhere to these two points, you will display a character that is Godly, and one that likes to help their fellow man. If everything you did in life, if every action placed loving God and your neighbor first, imagine how much better of a person we would become…

Friends, remember what we have been called to do.

Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

Mark 16:15

That does not mean you will get everything right. You are going to mess up in life, you are going to misinterpret some Scriptures. It’s just going to happen. We are imperfect. We are dealing with a book that was compiled from numerous manuscripts that was translated numerous times, (see: How We Got The Bible And Its History).

We are blessed to have the Bible we have today, but through translations, there will be some issues that will ensure we never get it all right. In a way, I sort of think that’s one of the points of life. God knows we are imperfect, and He knows we are going to fall short.

Come Judgment Day, no one will be without Biblical error. Yet, it will be more about our actions, our fruit for God, our love for God, and our fellow man that defines our place in His Eternal Kingdom, (Revelation 22:12).

Think about it,

  • How often do we allow the minor things in life to separate us?
  • How many of you have families that are broken due to religious beliefs?

If we all stopped fighting over those minute details. If we all stopped arguing over our own interpretations, and just listened and adhered to Jesus Christ’s simple words…

Think how much better our families would be.

Think how much better our world would be.
