What Does Matthew 11:27 Mean?

Question: What does Matthew 11:27 mean?

Answer: Thanks for the question Tony.

The Son and Father have a very close bond. Yet, it’s a bond we can become a part of when we accept Jesus Christ. Simply stated, the verse means, no one comes to the Father except through the Son.

Now, let’s read the verse together.

Matthew 11:27
All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.

The last part can be a bit tough to follow, so let’s break the entire verse down, and then we can put it all together at the end.

  • “All things are delivered unto me of my Father…”

As Scripture tells us, God provided Jesus with power over all things, (John 3:35).

  • “…and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son…”

We are being explicitly told, only the Father fully knows the Son, and likewise, no one fully knows the Father except the Son.

Moreover, the word “knoweth” even means, “to become fully acquainted with.”

  • “…and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.”

We cannot become acquainted with our Heavenly Father without Jesus Christ.

Why?

John 14:6
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

And…

1 Timothy 2:5
For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

The Son, Jesus Christ is our mediator. That’s why I always close my prayers saying, “in Jesus name.”

We have yet another reason why we cannot become acquainted with the Father without the Son.

2 John 1:9
Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.

There we have it.

If we accept Jesus as John 3:16 explains, then we have the Son, who mediates for us to the Father.

So let’s have the verse you asked about one more time, then let’s put it all together.

Matthew 11:27
All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.

God the Father sent His Son Jesus Christ into the world to accomplish a mission. Christ was successful, and for that, God delivered all power and glory to Jesus Christ, (Dan 7:13-14, Matt 28:18, Joh 6:38, 13:3).

The Father and Son have a close bond, one we will fully comprehend when we’re in Heaven. Nevertheless, we can also come to know the Father through our relationship with the Son. When we accept Jesus, He accepts us, and He introduces us to the Father who brings the Holy Spirit.

On the contrary, if we do not accept Jesus, then He will not accept us, and He will not “reveal” us to God. Exactly what we were told in Matthew 10:33.
