God established very specific laws that required the death penalty if they were violated. This prevented evil from spreading throughout society by destroying it. The rest of society would take note of the punishment, and sin would cease to be a thought among the people.
Deuteronomy 17:6-7
6 At the mouth of two witnesses, or three witnesses, shall he that is worthy of death be put to death; but at the mouth of one witness he shall not be put to death.7 The hands of the witnesses shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterward the hands of all the people. So thou shalt put the evil away from among you.

Deuteronomy 17:12-13
12 And the man that will do presumptuously, and will not hearken unto the priest that standeth to minister there before the LORD thy God, or unto the judge, even that man shall die: and thou shalt put away the evil from Israel.13 And all the people shall hear, and fear, and do no more presumptuously.
One more example.
Deuteronomy 19:19-20
19 Then shall ye do unto him, as he had thought to have done unto his brother: so shalt thou put the evil away from among you.20 And those which remain shall hear, and fear, and shall henceforth commit no more any such evil among you.
So then, by failing to follow what God said, evil will be among you and prevail. This happened to the ancient Israelites, so much so, that God left them, and scattered them.
Unfortunately, our government is repeating the same mistakes of the past, which can only mean one thing…
