More homes on Hawaii’s Big Island were destroyed on Saturday as eruptions linked to the Kilauea volcano increased, spewing lava into residential areas and forcing nearly 2,000 people to evacuate, officials said.
Residents in Puna’s Leilani Estates subdivision fled with little more than the clothes on their backs Thursday night after an eruption in Kilauea’s east rift zone created a fissure in the community, spewing lava into the air as high as utility poles, covering roads and nearing several homes.
A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck near the Channel Islands early Thursday afternoon, jolting residents in the Los Angeles area and beyond as Southern California saw its largest quake in more than four years, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
