How Many Fallen Angels Are There?

Question: How many fallen angels are there?

Also, in Jude there are fallen angels bound in chains, will they appear with Satan during the Tribulation? Lastly, who are the four angels in the Euphrates River?

Answer: Thank you for the question.

For clarity, “Fallen Angel” is not a Biblical term. However, it’s commonly used to refer to the angels who left Heaven during the days of Noah. On the other hand, an angel can be considered “fallen” if they fell from the grace of God. That would include the Devil himself.

Now, the Bible doesn’t specifically say how many fallen angels there are. However, we are given a very specific number that will appear during the Tribulation. I’ll explain that, and also provide a rough approximation for the total number of evil angels in existance.

Let’s see what we can come up with…

The Number Of Fallen Angels

As we consider the number of Fallen Angels, and evil angels in general. I want to give you something to think about.

Throughout history, there have always been a “few” that stood by God.

Today, the global population stands at 8 billion souls, and historians think roughly 107 billion people lived before us. If that is remotely close, then perhaps God created roughly 115 billion souls.

Now think about that…

115 billion souls and Scripture tells us, “few will be saved” and “few be there that find” and navigate the narrow path to eternal life, (Matthew 7:14).

According to Revelation 12:3-4, during the fall of Satan, a third of all souls willingly — out of their own free will — joined Satan in his rebellion against God. Perhaps there was another third or so that followed Satan as well. I can say that as “few” have followed God, not “many.”

So what is a third or even two-thirds of 115 billion?

Do the math, it will make your head spin. Especially when we consider at the very end of the Millennium, after seeing Jesus and all His Glory, Satan gathers up enough of God’s children to turn against Him one more time. “The number of whom is as the sand of the sea,” (Revelation 20:8).

So with that, we can form an educated guess…

There must be billions of wicked angels, billions of wicked souls.

Now, I would like to take your mind back to the time of Jesus.

One Man Had A Legion Of Wicked Angels

When Jesus went into the country of the Gadarenes. There was a man who walked among the tombs that was possessed by an evil spirit(s). Jesus told the evil spirit, “Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit,” (Mark 5:8).

And He asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many.

Mark 5:9

Jesus was communicating with the unclean spirit who was not alone.

The evil spirit responded to Jesus by saying, “We are many” and referenced a “Legion,” which was a military unit within the Roman army. In fact, a Roman Legion was equivalent to about 6,000 men. That means, this single man was infested with over 6,000 evil spirits!

To answer your question, that tells us there will be multitudes of wicked angels that appear with Satan.

In fact, Scripture declares the number…

During “the time of trouble,” thegreat tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be” the earth will be filled with 200 million wicked angels who make up the Locust Army, (Jer 30:7, Dan 12:1, Matt 24:21, Rev 9:16).

The Groups Of Fallen Angels

We should also be aware of the fact, there are three sets of evil angels.

  1. The four angels bound in the Euphrates River, (Revelation 9:14).
  2. The Locust Army of Revelation 9:1-3.
  3. The angels bound in chains, (Jude 1:6).

Let’s read about the angels recorded in Jude.

Jude 1:6
And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.

These Fallen Angels are not numbered, and they became “fallen” during and after the time of Noah. They left Heaven and came to earth taking women as wives, and fathering children who became known as Giants.

These Fallen Angels will not appear with Satan on earth during the Sixth Trumpet. The verse tells us, these Fallen Angels are “reserved in everlasting chains” by God until “the judgment of the great day.”

The word “reserved” has some very interesting meanings.

Prevent escaping, a fortress or full military lines” are just a few.

It then becomes clear, these Fallen Angels are not going anywhere.

Not until the great day of Judgement, which is either the “minor” Judgement at the return of Jesus, or the “major” White Throne Judgement that will transpire after the Millennium, (Revelation 11:13, 20:10-11). It seems to me, these angels already had their opportunity to wreak havoc on mankind.

The Four Angels Bound In The River Euphrates

Now, the Four Angels “bound” in the Euphrates River are certainly followers of Satan and tied to the Locust Army. The fact they are “bound,” just as the angels of Jude, and the Locust Army of the Tribulation prove they have transgressed God’s Law. Otherwise, they would not be “bound” or locked in the bottomless pit, (Revelation 9:1-3, 7, 16).

I will add, I do not believe these angels are literally in the Euphrates River, that is symbology to describe the area where they will possibly appear. We also know, this is the general region that is connected with the “minor” Day of Judgement, at the return of Jesus Christ.

Summary

We can now conclude, there must be billions of wicked souls who are wicked angels. Fallen Angels if you prefer.

Moreover, when Satan is cast from Heaven to earth, 200 million wicked angels will appear with him. That defines the Tribulation, the moment when Satan will claim to be God, (2 Thessalonians 2:2-3, 7-9, Revelation 12:9).
