Will God Allow Nuclear War?

We commonly hear the phrase “nuclear war” in the news. It’s continually repeated by the mediaand heads of state. They display no regard for what a nuclear war would actually look like, or what it would mean for you and I.

It’s almost like our minds are being prepared for such an unfathomable event.

However, there is a great distinction that we must draw here. “A nation using a nuclear weapon” and a “nuclear war” are two entirely different scenarios.

A nation that uses a nuclear weapon against another nation does not constitute a nuclear war. However, if the nation being attacked or someone acting on their behalf retaliates with a nuclear weapon…

Well then, we have a nuclear war.

We have never had the second scenario, but we certainly had the first.

Almost 80 years ago, the United States dropped two nuclear bombs on Japan. Roughly 220,000 people died as a result of the unprecedented bombings.

The damage was caused by a 22 kiloton (Fat Man) and 15 kiloton bomb (Little Boy).

This is what the calamity actually looked like.

Hiroshima before (left) and after (right).

Total devastation.

Unfortunately, a 22 kiloton bomb is a firecracker when compared with today’s nuclear weapons. The United States B83 is 1.2 megatons, making it 60 times more powerful than the bomb dropped on Nagasaki. That doesn’t even take into account Russia’s 50 megaton “Tsar Bomba”.

We can easily imagine, an actual nuclear war would destroy humanity. It most certainly would set off a chain of events where other nations started launching their own missiles in fear of being destroyed themselves.

It would be, nuclear armageddon.

Will There Be Nuclear War?

However, nuclear war is not recorded in the Bible.

It’s not man’s judgment against each other that will destroy us, rather it’s God’s Judgement that will usher in the return of Jesus Christ.

So when government and media get your stomach tied up in knots, that’s when you have to relax, and open up the Bible. When we do that, we find that God appoints our leaders.

…For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.

Romans 13:1

The powers of this world; the good, the bad, and the ugly are determined by God.

  • Do you honestly believe God would appoint leaders to destroy His creation?
  • Do you honestly believe God would allow anyone to alter the words in His Book?

Of course not.

Yet, we have another witness…

Daniel 2:21
And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding:

Also: Daniel 5:18

It’s God, our Heavenly Father that sets up and removes our leaders.

God is in control.

In fact, during the time of Moses, Pharaoh wanted to free the Israelites and let them leave their long bondage in Egypt. Yet, it was God that continually hardened Pharaoh’s heart. God forced Pharaoh against his free will to keep the Israelites in bondage, (Exodus 9:12, 10:20, 27, 11:10, 14:8).

Ecclesiastes 3:1
To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:

Always remember that, but nuclear war is not one of them.

Nuclear War In The Bible

There are no Bible verses about nuclear war.

No Revelation nuclear war.

No Ezekiel nuclear war.

However, that has not stopped some Christians from distorting Scripture in order to manifest such a belief. One of the most common verses used to cite such a scenario revolves around 2 Peter.

Let’s read it together.

2 Peter 3:10
But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

What is the subject of the verse?

“The day of the Lord” and how He appears.

It’s not about a nuclear war at all.

How exactly would the ‘heavens pass away’ in a nuclear war?

They wouldn’t.

Moreover, the word “heavens” simply means, “the sky” or “the abode of God”. All we are talking about is the events of the Seventh Trumpet when “heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together”, (Revelation 6:14, 11:15, 20:11).

When…

Revelation 6:15
And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;

Why do they hide themselves?

Revelation 6:16
And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:

They want to be hidden from the face of Jesus Christ when He appears. They cannot face the fact that God is real, when many of them doubted His existence.

That’s all 2 Peter 3 is talking about.

In fact, the word “burned up” in 2 Peter 3:10 means, “consume wholly”. The entire world will be consumed by the appearance of Jesus Christ and His Angels. So much so, that they will do anything to hide their shame.

2 Peter 3:11
Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,

“All” what will be dissolved?

Satan’s earthly kingdom, and all the evil workings of this world, (2 Corinthians 4:4, Revelation 20:1-2). Those that cry out for the mountains and rocks to fall of them. We are simply talking about the destruction of Babylon, (Revelation 16:19, 18:10, 21).

Moreover, if this were all describing a nuclear war, why are we concerned with being in “all holy conversation and godliness”. It wouldn’t really matter, would it?

2 Peter 3:12
Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?

Look for nuclear war?

No.

God is a consuming fire, and we are to look for the coming of God’s Kingdom that Jesus Christ will bring, (Hebrews 12:29).

We are simply being told the world order of man will be destroyed by Jesus and replaced with the Kingdom of God. In fact, the entire earth will be rejuvenated after the Millennium, (2 Peter 3:13).

Summary

So while men will stir up all sorts of uncertainties in your mind. Know and understand, take comfort, that there will not be a full blown nuclear war between nations.

It’s simply not written in Scripture.

Nuclear weapons may certainly be used, and they have been used as we explained earlier. However, the destruction of mankind and this earth will never happen. Instead, we will live with God on earth, in peace, forever, (Revelation 21:4).

God promised it, and that’s the surest guarantee you will ever find.
