Can You Inherit Demons From Your Parents Or Through Drug Use?

Name: Kim B
Question: Brandon I trust your teachings. Came across this and it kind of blew my mind. I would really like some clarity on it, from you, if you have the time and or interest. My daughter is in recovery from 15 years of heavy drug use. Just wondering if and how this article may apply to her. Does she need to have demons cast out? She is a believer, always has been. Thanks.

Note: I withheld the link Kim included out of respect for the Christian ministry in question. They proposed that drug use is a curse of evil spirits, which is wrought in an individual due to the sin of their parents.

Answer: Kim,

Good morning.

I always have time for readers!

So sorry to hear about your daughter, I know drugs are a horrible thing.

As for that article, I have an issue with a couple of the quotes:

  • “The number one way demons come into a person is from inheritance.”
  • “Demons could have come into you while in the womb because of the actions of your parents.”

Those statements are simply not true for the following reasons:

Ezekiel 18:20
The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.

And…

Deuteronomy 24:16
The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, neither shall the children be put to death for the fathers: every man shall be put to death for his own sin.

And…

Jeremiah 31:29-30
29 In those days they shall say no more, The fathers have eaten a sour grape, and the children’s teeth are set on edge.

30 But every one shall die for his own iniquity: every man that eateth the sour grape, his teeth shall be set on edge.

And…

Matthew 16:27
For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.

There’s more verses, but these make it clear. We do not inherit the sin of our parents. They are responsible for themselves. We are all responsible for our own actions in life.

Now, none of that is to say evil spirits are not involved in the drug scene. Evil always surrounds itself with more evil. However, that does not mean everyone smoking a joint is possessed with an evil spirit either. That would be reading too much into it.

When evil is present, it’s pretty easy to spot. Just read some of the accounts in the Bible. Some of the men were mad. Some spoke with wicked voices that were not their own. Others had super human strength.

Evil can be subtle too, but I wouldn’t say everyone on drugs has an evil spirit. Venturing into the drug scene would certainly bring someone closer to evil, but again, that doesn’t mean they’re possessed or in danger of it.

However, it does mean they are further away from God, and that’s the true danger.

With that said, evil never wants anything to do with God. Yet, often times, people on drugs do love God, but they just cannot pull themselves away from the addition. They need help, they could use counseling, and a spiritually positive environment.

They need to get out of the old environment, and start a new life.

It’s the only way out.

That’s an entirely different subject, but I just don’t want you to think people on drugs are all demon possessed, that’s simply not true, and they certainly didn’t inherit a demon from their parents.

I hope that helps Kim, and I said a prayer for your family.
