What Does The Bible Say About Marijuana?

Name: Amy
Question: I am curious your thoughts on weed. I don’t use it and people say it’s natural. Some say it’s a gateway drug and now with all these states legalizing it not sure how it can be regulated.

Answer: Thanks for the question Amy.

Hey, asbestos is natural too, but I don’t recommend snorting the stuff. 😁

Homosexual marriage is legal, but it’s still a sin against God, (Acts 5:29, Lev 20:13, 1 Cor 6:9, Rom 1:26-27).

I knew when states first started talking about legalizing marijuana, the states only wanted to do so for taxation. I think we all knew that one. Now we see Oregon legalizing hard core drugs. Marijuana was only a means to get there. Once we got there, they go to the next level. That’s always how it works.

The Bible On Marijuana

Unfortunately, there is no specific Scripture we can point to and say, “See, look, marijuana is against God right there”!

However, there are some verses that talk about the altered mind, and that is what drugs do right?

Turn your Bible with me to,

1 Thessalonians 5:6
Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.

I encourage you to read through verse eight, but the point is Christians are to keep a sober mind. We are supposed to be working in the field for Christ, not smoking marijuana, getting blazed out of our minds because the government said it’s now legal.

Let’s further the point. Turn with me to,

Galatians 5:19-21
19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,

21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

This one really nails it for us, though it doesn’t mention specific drugs, and how could Scripture?

The point is, the works of the flesh, including drunkennessand such like” it are sins. By adding “such like” it, Scripture just widened our understanding of what is and what is not acceptable to God.

I want you to think about that for a second.

Drunkenness Is A Sin

When we hear the word “drunk”, we automatically think of someone who had too much alcohol.

However, the word “drunkenness” in Galatians actually means,

An intoxicant, that is, (by implication) intoxication: – drunkenness.

That indicates, “drunkenness” covers a very wide range of applications.

When you drink too much alcohol, you become drunk which means you are intoxicated, and the word means,

(Of alcoholic drink or a drug) cause (someone) to lose control of their faculties or behavior.

Marijuana and other drugs make one become intoxicated, just like alcohol.

Regardless of the method, once someone becomes intoxicated (especially continually), they fall into this list of sins. That means, unless they repent and cease from the sin, they “shall not inherit the kingdom of God”, (Ezekiel 18:20, Romans 6:23).

Conclusion

All of this really lets us know, we are not to become drunkards, and drug use is not okay with God, (1 Corinthians 6:10). People abuse alcohol and drugs to become intoxicated in order to escape reality. Christians should not partake in that.

We should also notice the intent. The point of Galatians 5:19-21 was to explain the “works of the flesh” which are evil doings. I point that out for people who are truly using marijuana-based medicines for pain. Not abusing it, and using pain as an excuse to smoke, but truly using it for some medical reason.
