They Trust In Flesh, We Trust In God

With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the Lord our God to help us, and to fight our battles. And the people rested themselves upon the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.

2 Chronicles 32:8

I have to give you a little background here. King Hezekiah made this statement as the king of Assyria begin to surround Jerusalem with his armies.

While King Hezekiah and the Israelites could not see God, they could certainly see the Assyrian army approaching the city. Yet, King Hezekiah remembered God, and he told his men,

Be strong and courageous, be not afraid nor dismayed for the king of Assyria, nor for all the multitude that is with him: for there be more with us than with him.

2 Chronicles 32:7

Then King Hezekiah spoke the words of verse 8. The Israelites were certainly outnumbered as far as they could observe, but their enemy was only flesh, while God Almighty stood with the Israelites, making their numbers far greater.

As we have heard before,

…If God be for us, who can be against us?

Romans 8:31

It is pretty easy to make that statement when times are good. Yet, when trouble begins to surround us, and affect us, how many of us can really display the level of faith king Hezekiah had?

If you continue reading this chapter, the Assyrians began to verbally assault the Israelites, engaging in psychological warfare. It would be pretty easy to cave into their thoughts as they had conquered so many people in the past.

Yet, king Hezekiah remained faithful to God. He then cried out to God when the times were so difficult, he knew he could not manage it alone, and God heard his cries and sent an angel,

…which cut off all the mighty men of valour, and the leaders and captains in the camp of the king of Assyria.

2 Chronicles 32:21

You always want to remember this story.

The Assyrians trusted in themselves, while the Israelites trusted in God. When life becomes too difficult, and we have done everything we can do, that is when we turn it over to God.

He can overcome all obstacles, even when it looks like we do not have a prayer of a chance. The difference is when you possess enough faith to believe, He will actually do that for you.
