Those Led By Our Leaders Are Destroyed By Them

For the leaders of this people cause them to err; and they that are led of them are destroyed.

Isaiah 9:16

Many Christians believe we must obey the laws of the land due to Romans 13. However, those Scriptures only apply to good leaders, leaders who honor God. Christians should never obey wicked leaders, leaders who go against God, and even His natural order of things.

I tell you what, if you listen to someone just because they are a “leader,” well, you just might be a bigger fool than they are.

Unfortunately, people always show obedience to men due to their stature or position of perceived authority. Long ago, the Israelites listened to their wicked leaders, “which made Israel to sin,” over and over again, (1 Kings 14:16).

This happened so often, God often blew His top. In fact, in Isaiah 9:16, God was upset with the Israelites as they were continually persuaded by their leaders. Not just their political leaders, but their religious leaders as well.

By the way, did you catch how that verse ended?

“They that are led of them are destroyed.”

The people who are led by their leaders are destroyed.

That’s what God said, you can take it to the bank.

The fact of the matter is, the leaders of the Israelites continually led them down a road that did not lead them to God. Oh, I’m sure the leaders talked a good game and seemed like really great people at times.

However, being a really nice guy is not going to get you into God’s Kingdom, is it?

You have to follow the Lord, not follow the man.

However, the Israelites never managed to do that. It was much easier to serve the man, and probably more exciting too. There the man is, but God is nowhere to be found. So they serve the man, they listen to the man, and follow the man wherever he takes them.

It sounds like our world today.

Political and religious leaders often obtain cult-like followings, and the people rarely realize how blinded they have become by said “leader.” Instead, the people follow, and follow some more, often forgetting their first love, Jesus Christ.

You know, God said history repeats itself, (Ecclesiastes 1:9). Unfortunately, it’s happening once again.

My question is, how far will history repeat this time?

You see, in Isaiah 9, God had enough of Israel. He was sick and tired of them following after men which always led them to sin. Men, as in, the leaders of the people, who led them away from God and toward sin. I imagine, the people rarely realized it was happening at first.

Have you looked at our world today?

Sin doesn’t just pop in on a righteous world. Sin slowly creeps in, and then some leaders provide an excuse for it to stay. Then sin builds, and sin builds some more, until sin pushes God out of the room.

So there went the Israelites, and so went their protection from God.

Isaiah 9:14
Therefore the LORD will cut off from Israel head and tail, branch and rush, in one day.

God would often chastise the Israelites for their sin, then over time, they would come crying back to Him for salvation. However, it reached a point that God finally divorced Israel, (Isaiah 50:1).

So how far will history repeat?

Let’s see what else happened to the Israelites.

Let’s read what happens when we follow our leaders, instead of God…

Isaiah 9:21
Manasseh, Ephraim; and Ephraim, Manasseh: and they together shall be against Judah. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.
