We Just Dodged Doomsday

Just two weeks ago, mankind managed to avoid cosmic doom.

That’s right, for all intents and purposes, mankind could have faced an extinction level event, and you probably didn’t hear a word about it. Oh, it wouldn’t have been instant annihilation, it would have been the slow painful death of humanity, all caused by a massive solar storm.

On March 12th, the sun emitted an enormous coronal mass ejection or CME.

Here’s how a NASA scientist put it.

Did you catch that?

“As fast if not faster than the fastest CME like the famous Carrington Event.”

What’s the Carrington Event?

On the morning of September 1, 1859, amateur astronomer Richard Carrington ascended into the private observatory attached to his country estate outside of London. After cranking open the dome’s shutter to reveal the clear blue sky, he pointed his brass telescope toward the sun and began to sketch a cluster of enormous dark spots that freckled its surface. Suddenly, Carrington spotted what he described as “two patches of intensely bright and white light” erupting from the sunspots. Five minutes later the fireballs vanished, but within hours their impact would be felt across the globe.

That night, telegraph communications around the world began to fail; there were reports of sparks showering from telegraph machines, shocking operators and setting papers ablaze. All over the planet, colorful auroras illuminated the nighttime skies, glowing so brightly that birds began to chirp and laborers started their daily chores, believing the sun had begun rising. Some thought the end of the world was at hand

Essentially, the Carrington Event was a massive solar storm that caused problems for the electronics of the time.

The ol’ telegraph machine.

Now, fast forward to our modern electronic world and you can begin to see the problem. Had the massive CME hit earth on March 12th, it would have been lights out.

Literally.

  • Cell phone networks, kaput.
  • Power grids, belly up.
  • Food supply, dried up in days.

Joy huh?

NASA previously stated, if we experienced a modern Carrington Event it would,

“…have a catastrophic effect on modern power grids and telecommunication networks.”

Power grids and networks would take “years to repair.”

You want to talk about doom, that’s doom.

You wouldn’t be going to the store for food once it ran out.

Instead, you would hunt and fish to survive, or starve. That is, if the undesirables of mankind didn’t kill you first to take your goods. Then, considering how many people exist on earth, we would eat out the animals before they could replace themselves.

So good morning my friends!

Go ahead and thank God that we didn’t suffer cosmic doom!

So you’re probably wondering, how did we manage to dodge the cosmic apocalypse?

The image below will provide the visuals…

You see the yellow dot there on the right?

That’s earth.

You see that major sun burp?

That was the CME.

Luckily, the solar flare ejected in the opposite direction of earth.

By the way, earth still felt that solar flare. Then, just days ago, another solar storm hit earth, the most powerful in six years. But that’s a fairly normal event, and not of the doomsday variety.

But, don’t look now, there’s a massive hole in the sun!

Oh, and in 2012, we had another Carrington Event, but earth once again wasn’t in the way.

All right, you get it.

Uncertainty abounds when we consider the cosmos, or does it?

This whole topic sparked an entire conversation in my household.

I think it was my daughter who said,

God must fine tune the universe then, to ensure we don’t get wiped out. Otherwise, a solar storm or even an asteroid could take us out!

How right she is.

While I’m quite aware of Genesis 8:22,

“While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.”

Cosmic storms would not affect our seasons.

I told my kids, boy, if something like that happened, I would open my Bible and scratch my head. I cannot think of a single Scripture that would explain such a “doomish” event. In fact, nothings written in the Bible about it, which means it’s not going to happen.

It’s not a part of God’s plan.

Not a humanity killer anyway.

So, I’m inclined to agree with my daughter.

God has finely tuned our universe to ensure something like this doesn’t happen.

Hey, asteroid and meteor impacts are visible on earth. They have happened. Then, go take a peek at our cratered moon. It’s not like we cannot be hit, we surely can (and have). That is, if there was no outside force intervening. In this case, God protecting His creation.

So, enjoy your coffee and oatmeal a bit more this morning.

It could have been your last.
